Acupuncture for Chronic Conditions

Acupuncture and Chinese medicine for complex and long-standing health problems

You may have symptoms that have lasted months or years: fatigue, pain, digestive problems, poor sleep, hormonal changes, skin or breathing problems, or a mix that has not fit a clear diagnosis. You may have seen several doctors and tried a number of treatments.

I work with complex and chronic conditions using acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, and practical support for the stress that often comes with a long illness. We start with your full history, what you have already tried, and what matters most to you now.

I see patients at Morningstar Healing Arts in Ashland, Oregon, and offer remote consultations for herbal medicine and coaching.

How I can help

People come to me with long-standing fatigue, digestive problems, recurring respiratory illness, skin conditions, menstrual and hormonal problems, sleep problems, stress-related symptoms, and health problems that several doctors have not been able to explain.

Depending on your needs, we may work with:

  • Acupuncture to help ease symptoms and support sleep, energy, and recovery.
  • Chinese herbal medicine, tailored to your symptoms and health history, with careful consideration of medications you are taking. I have been board certified in Chinese herbal medicine since 2008.
  • Mindfulness and nervous system tools to help you work with stress, pacing, and difficult days.
  • Support with your medical care, such as organizing questions for your doctors and keeping track of what changes.

A long illness affects more than the body. It can wear on your sleep, your mood, and your trust in your own body. I pay attention to those things too, because they are often part of what keeps symptoms going.

“Three different acupuncturists in two different states were not able to provide the results I’ve experienced with Jeremy… After 20 years of monthly misery, I have had nearly pain-free periods for the past three months.”

Marisa’s story

Marisa came to me with chronic pain, inflammation, and exhaustion. We worked together remotely using Chinese herbal medicine, coaching, and mindfulness tools.

“The herbs that I took allowed my body to calm down. My face started to clear. The inflammation was tamped down… They don’t rule my day anymore.”

Marisa

Judith’s story

Judith came to me with bronchitis, deep lung problems, and repeated bouts of pneumonia. We have worked together over time with acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, and remote coaching.

“Your guiding me through the understanding of what Chinese herbs could do was just amazing. I don’t have any lung problems anymore.”

What to expect

Your first appointment includes a longer conversation about your symptoms, how they started, what you have tried, your health history, and any medications and supplements you take. If you have lab results or records, bring them. I also use Chinese medicine assessment, including pulse and tongue observation, to inform your treatment.

Treatment usually begins at the first visit. We talk about a plan, what to watch for, and how we will know if it is helping.

At follow-up visits, we look at what has changed: energy, sleep, digestion, pain, and how you are managing day to day. We adjust as we go.

“I’m the son and grandson of doctors and have great respect for MDs. I had a nearly innate skepticism of acupuncture. No longer.”

Common questions

What kinds of conditions do you treat?

Long-standing fatigue, digestive problems, recurring respiratory illness, skin conditions, menstrual and hormonal problems, sleep problems, stress-related symptoms, and health problems without a clear diagnosis. If you are not sure whether I can help, a free consultation is a good place to start.

Will I need herbs, or just acupuncture?

It depends on what is going on. Some people do well with acupuncture alone. For others, a custom herbal formula is an important part of treatment. We decide together, and I review your medications and supplements before recommending herbs.

Is this safe if I am already under medical care?

Yes, and it works best alongside it. Tell me about your diagnoses, medications, and other treatment so I can take them into account. Any changes to prescribed medication should be discussed with your prescribing clinician.

How long before I notice a change?

That depends on the problem, how long it has been present, and how you respond. Some people notice changes early. Long-standing problems usually take a series of visits. We will set an initial plan and review it together. If you are not improving, we will talk about changing the approach or seeking another kind of care.

I have already seen many practitioners. Is it worth trying?

Many of my patients have. It helps to talk through what you have tried and how you responded. That tells us whether I have something useful to offer, and where to start if we work together.

Can we work together remotely?

Yes, for Chinese herbal medicine and coaching. Many people I work with live outside Oregon. Acupuncture is in person in Ashland.

About me

I’m Jeremy Rothenberg, a licensed acupuncturist, herbalist, and coach. I have been board certified in Chinese herbal medicine since 2008 and practiced for a decade in San Francisco before moving to Ashland.

For most of my adult life I could not run more than two miles. I trained, it never changed, and I assumed that was how I was built.

It wasn’t. A calcified sac had been constraining my heart since I was 21, slowly limiting what it could do. Neither I nor my doctors knew. At 54 I had open-heart surgery, and in the first year of recovery I ran 939 miles. I am training for a 50K now.

That experience shaped how I listen to people and how seriously I take symptoms that have not been explained. I bring that attention to your history, your examination, and how you respond to treatment.
